Allergen-specific immunotherapy (allergy
injections, desensitization) is the process of administering gradually
increasing dosages of those allergens to which the patient is allergic.
Injections are given subcutaneously and the amount of allergen is gradually
increased until a maintenance dose is reached. These injections stimulate the
patient’s “non allergic” immune response and suppress the “allergic” immune
response. As a result, the patient’s allergy symptoms are resolved.
Although the benefits of immunotherapy
are well documented in humans and animals (greater than 70% of patients show
marked improvement), the process is not a “quick fix”. Some patients show
improvement in a matter of weeks, but most take much longer. Immunotherapy is
often administered for at least one year before the full benefits can be
observed or the lack of a response is noted.
